The Lifetime Assignment

The computer science capstone gave students one assignment that was never graded and is never complete: “your most important work will never be graded or complete.” Rather than a deadline-driven deliverable, it’s a set of lifelong practices — habits of integrity and continuous growth meant to outlast the course, the degree, and any one job.

Everything else in Corpus — every Human Skill, every AI-Assisted Workflow, every Agent Skill — is in service of these thirteen habits. They’re the reason the techniques exist, not a fourteenth technique alongside them.

Thirteen Enduring Habits

  1. Keep learning new things — Maintain curiosity about technology, art, and people through reading, listening, building, and questioning.
  2. Own your work and your words — Take responsibility for all creations and communications with honesty, clarity, and kindness.
  3. Seek understanding before certainty — Replace fear with curiosity when encountering unfamiliar concepts; listen deeply and revise beliefs with new evidence.
  4. Write and speak with care — Treat communication as respect, prioritizing clarity and empathy over complexity and ego.
  5. Practice humility and gratitude — Acknowledge others’ contributions to your knowledge; express gratitude regularly to remain teachable and connected.
  6. Balance ambition with rest — Work diligently on meaningful pursuits while recognizing that reflection and joy sustain excellence and creativity.
  7. Stay kind in difficult conversations — Approach disagreement collaboratively, listening fully and honoring different perspectives.
  8. Nurture integrity in small decisions — Choose honesty and fairness in unobserved moments because they matter intrinsically.
  9. Pay your learning forward — Share knowledge freely through teaching and mentoring to deepen your own understanding.
  10. Keep revising yourself — Continually revisit assumptions and refine habits, treating personal growth as an ongoing editorial process.
  11. Keep perspective — Measure life by positive impact on others rather than technological or career achievements alone.
  12. Continue showing up — Demonstrate consistent presence in work, relationships, and community with curiosity and care.
  13. Live with wonder — Find beauty in complexity and joy in problem-solving, appreciating the privilege of thinking and creating.
